As the inactivation process in postbiotics cleaves the Lactobacillus LB bacterial cell walls, liberated proteins, metabolites and cellular fragments are able to cross the inner and the outer mucosal layers, providing barrier protection from pathogen adhesion by inhibiting the attachment of pathogens and their internalisation. 12 The metabolites can also access the epithelial cells, modulating immune responses10.
Moreover, because these molecules only gradually pass through the mucus layers, they tend to accumulate on the apical side, helping to maintain the barrier’s integrity10.
Postbiotics, thanks to the inactivation of the micro-organisms have specific properties, including gradual but steady access to the epithelial cells, a good safety profile with minimal risk of infection, and a high stability, which enables efficacy to be preserved irrespective of coadministration with antibiotics or antifungals.
There is also no need for refrigerated storage.
Lacteol fort have a good safety profile, are well tolerated and can generally also be taken by most patient populations, including newborns and infants10,11. Postbiotics do not have risk of infection in vulnerable population10.

What are the advantages of being inactivated?
Inactivating the micro-organisms by heat-treatment has a number of
advantages:1,2
How can inactivated micro-organisms be effective?
Many clinical studies proved the efficacy and health benefits of inactivated micro-organisms.
Inactivated micro-organisms contain whole cells and the actives substances they contain. Both archieve their effects in a number of ways:1
What are the benefits of Lactéol® ?
Why is Lactéol® unique and different?
Lactéol® is unique because it is the first postbiotic with clinically demonstrated efficacy and safety that is suitable for the whole family, from the youngest to the oldest.4-6 Lactéol® has unique properties. The unique bacterial strains in Lactobacillus LB are registered and stored at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, and are owned by Adare. Lactéol® is manufactured in France to certified pharmaceutical production standards. The production process is also a proprietary technology. Lactéol®’s unique composition offers effective treatment of diarrhoea with the benefits of being heat-treated.
Is Lactéol® a probiotic?
The WHO defines probiotics as live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host.1 Lactéol®‘s active ingredients are freeze-dried, heat-treated Lactobacillus LB and its cell culture supernatant. Lactéol® is a postbiotic because the micro-organisms have been heat-treated.2
Lactéol® has been shown in clinical studies to be effective and well tolerated in both children and adults for the treatment of any type of diarrhoea of any cause.3-5
How can Lactéol® be effective when it has been inactivated?
The mechanisms of action of live and inactivated micro-organisms (such as heat-treated micro-organisms) are different.6 The efficacy of Lactéol® does not depend on the viability of the cells. lts efficacy is based on the active microbial components. lnactivated micro-organisms and cell culture supernatants contain fragments of cellular structures and liberated bacterial secretions. These are capable of crossing both the outer and the inner mucosal layers and can directly stimulate the epithelial cells.6 As the cellular fragments and metabolites released by the heat-treatment of postbiotics gradually cross the mucosal layers, they tend to accumulate on the apical side, reinforcing the barrier’s integrity.6
When should I prescribe or recommend Lactéol®?
Lactéol® can be prescribed for both adults and children with diarrhoea. Lactéol® should be taken as soon as possible after the start of diarrhoea; rehydration and/or dietary measures should also be initiated. The dosage of 1 to 2 sachets or capsules should be adjusted according to the intensity of the diarrhoea, with the possibility of taking up to 3 sachets or capsules on the first day of treatment. *7-9
* Dosage for the 340 mg capsules and sachets.9,10 For 170 mg the dosage is 2 to 4 capsules per day, based on the intensity of the condition and may be increased to 6 capsules on the first day of treatment.7
Can Lactéol® be given in combination with oral rehydration solutions?
Yes. Lactéol® is indicated to be given as an adjunct to oral rehydration and/or dietary measures.6-8
Can Lactéol® be administered concurrently with antibiotics?
Yes. Lactéol® demonstrated to reduce the risk of diarrhoea in patients taking antibiotic therapy.3
ls Lactéol® effective for viral diarrhoea?
Yes. Lactéol® has been shown to be effective for both rotavirus-associated and non-rotavirus diarrhoea.4-5 When administered of with oral rehydration and/or dietary measures it reduces the frequency and increases the consistency of stool.4,5
Can Lactéol® be used by the whole family?
Lactéol® has been designed for use by the whole family, from the very young to the very old, including vulnerable patients at high risk of infection. Lactéol® is formulated as 340 mg and 170 mg capsules for children over 6 and for adults. Lactéol® is also available as 340 mg sachets for dispersion in water to allow those under the age of 6 to be able to take it more easily.6-8
What makes Lactéol® unique?
Lactéol® is unique because it is the first postbiotic with clinically demonstrated efficacy and safety that is suitable for the whole family, from the youngest to the oldest.7-9 Lactéol® has unique bacterial species in Lactobacillus LB are registered and stored at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, and are owned by Adare. Lactéol® is manufactured in France to certified pharmaceutical production standards. The production process is also proprietary technology. Lactéol®’s unique composition offers effective treatment of diarrhoea with the benefits of being heat-treated.
ls Lacteol® well tolerated?
Lactéol® has a good safety profile.7-9 ln its decades of wide use and many clinical studies, no serious events have been reported with regards to Lactéol®.3,14,10-12 Moreover, due to the absence of interactions, Lactéol® can be taken concomitantly with other treatments. Lactéol®‘s safety profile suggests there is minimal risk of fungal or septicaemic infection.7-9
What are the side effects of Lactéol®?
ln most cases no side effects are expected with Lactéol®, however some potential allergic reactions have been reported as a possible reaction to excipients.6-8 Lactéol® is made from heat-treated Lactobacillus species that are already present in the human microbiota and a reduced risk of side effects would be expected.7-9 If you have an allergy to any of Lactéol®’s ingredients, you should avoid taking Lactéol®.
Can Lactéol® be mixed with hot or cold beverages?
Lactéol® contains freeze-dried, heat-treated Lactobacillus LB and its fermented culture medium (fermentation supernatant), so it is very stable and can be taken with hot or cold drinks without any effect on its efficacy.
Can Lactéol® be stored at room temperature?
The Lactobacillus LB and culture supernatant in Lactéol® have been heat-treated, which affords them a very high degree of stability, thus no special refrigeration for storage or transport is required. Provided the packaging remains unopened, Lactéol® can be stored at room temperature (below 25°C) until its expiry date.6-8

Publications about Lactéol®
The active ingredient of Lactéol® is heat-treated Lactobacillus LB and its culture medium. Lactéol® is one of the most scientifically well documented micro-organism based therapeutics in the world regarding both efficacy and safety. In the past 30 years well over 50 articles describing Lactobacillus LB have been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
